Developer:  Microsoft Corporation

Where can I find Active X?

ActiveX is prevalent throughout software and browsers. Here are some common examples and instances:

BROWSER-  ActiveX scripts are commonly found throughout websites; people misassociate ActiveX with web scams. In reality, ActiveX is simply a very powerful technology that can be abused.

WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, ONENOTE— ActiveX drives some of the functionality of these programs and also gives them the ability to propagate the technology in non-application environments.

VISUAL STUDIO— ActiveX also drives many of the functionalities of the software

WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER— Once again, ActiveX enables features throughout Media Player. Without it, the player wouldn’t work.

Technologies Based on ActiveX

Microsoft has based many tools on Active X technology, including the following:

  • ActiveX Data Objects (ADO)
  • Active Server Pages ( ASP )
  • ActiveMovie ( later DirectShow, part of the DirectX family)
